This contemporary sculptor thinks of his work as a puzzle, carefully laying out each piece in preparatory drawings and clay models. Then, strips of walnut, teak, or African wax wood are joined together and worked over meticulously.
Wood is one of my favorite mediums because it is infinitely malleable but it takes serious effort to work well. Hsu Tung Han’s work is a beautiful blend of classic sculpture with subtle modern twists that place it in the present digital moment. It feels fresh but is executed in a way reminiscent of the previous generations of artisans.
